Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced the termination of negotiations with the Indian Air Force (IAF) over the transfer of Lengpui Airport, favoring the Airports Authority of India (AAI) instead. He described the IAF’s initial proposal as attractive but noted that the AAI’s option aligns more closely with public sentiment, influenced by opposition from NGOs and political parties. Lalduhoma expressed concern over potential privatization of the airport, emphasizing the need for AAI to secure prior approval before any outsourcing of operations, a condition that AAI has contested. Additionally, a formal valuation of the airport’s infrastructure is currently in progress, with expectations that AAI will compensate the state for its assets. Despite existing disagreements regarding the terms, particularly the “veto power” clause, the Chief Minister remains hopeful that a final agreement with AAI can soon be achieved.
