Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda on Wednesday visited landslide-affected areas in Nagaland’s Mon district and assured the people that the Centre would extend all possible support for relief and restoration efforts following the recent natural disaster.
Accompanied by Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal and Nagaland Rajya Sabha MP S. Phangnon Konyak, Nadda inspected the worst-affected areas at Defence Colony and nearby localities in Techa Ward. He also met families affected by the landslides at the Konyak Union office to assess the situation and hear their concerns.
Expressing solidarity with the affected families, Nadda described the devastation caused by the landslides as “very disheartening and painful” and assured them that the Government of India would stand by them during the recovery process.
“I have seen the situation and am aware of the hardships the people are facing. The Government of India will leave no stone unturned to support the relief and restoration efforts,” Nadda said. He also informed the people that a central team would soon visit the district to assist in relief and rehabilitation measures. The Union Minister conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of support to the affected families.
During his visit, Nadda appreciated the efforts of the district administration led by Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak, as well as the Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong and other organisations for managing relief camps and assisting affected residents.
He also commended the police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil society organisations and volunteers for their role in rescue and relief operations carried out in difficult conditions.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak briefed the Union Minister on the impact of the disaster. He said continuous rainfall had triggered floods and landslides across the district, damaging roads, bridges and other public infrastructure. The disaster disrupted road connectivity to several villages and temporarily affected electricity and water supply in many areas.
The Deputy Commissioner informed the delegation that relief camps had been established where required and that food, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies were being distributed to affected families.
Konyak Union president Yamao Konyak thanked Nadda for visiting the district and said the visit had reassured the people that “Mon is not alone in this dark hour.”
NSDMA Assistant Manager (Response and Communication) and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Mon nodal officer Rendemo Shitio presented a detailed assessment of the disaster. He said heavy rainfall on July 19 and 20 triggered severe landslides and flash floods that claimed lives, damaged homes and agricultural land, and blocked several key roads across the district.
According to the assessment, Mon headquarters recorded 83.95 mm of rainfall on July 19, while cumulative rainfall between July 19 and July 31 reached 341 mm, based on data from the district’s Automatic Weather Station. A video presentation prepared by the Konyak Union media team was also shown to the visiting delegation, highlighting the scale of the destruction.
