India has completed crucial rounds of trade negotiations with Peru and Chile as part of its strategy to expand export destinations amid rising US tariffs on Indian products.

The ninth round of India–Peru Trade Agreement talks took place in Lima from November 3–5, marking notable progress across key areas such as trade in goods and services, rules of origin, customs procedures, technical barriers, dispute settlement, and cooperation on critical minerals, the commerce ministry said on Thursday. Peru’s foreign trade minister Teresa Stella Mera Gómez reiterated her country’s commitment to concluding the deal soon, emphasizing strong economic complementarities. India’s ambassador to Peru, Vishvas Vidu Sapkal, highlighted that the pact would open opportunities in sectors like critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles, and food processing. Both sides agreed to hold intersessional meetings before the next round in New Delhi in January 2026.

Separately, the third round of India–Chile CEPA negotiations in Santiago (October 27–30) addressed issues related to trade, investment, and intellectual property. The discussions aim to boost market access and supply chain resilience. These initiatives follow the US decision to impose tariffs of up to 50% on several Indian exports from August 27.
