Six individuals from the Champhai area were apprehended by Assam Rifles men in Mizoram in collaboration with customs officials for smuggling areca nuts worth Rs 1.81 crore. Assam Rifles officers and customs officials began an area dominance patrol in Mualkawi, in the Champhai district of east Mizoram, early on Thursday morning in response to a specific intelligence feed. Six individuals were apprehended by the combined team, and following a comprehensive search, 386 bags (30,880 kg) of illegally obtained areca nuts valued at Rs 1.81 crore were found in the suspects’ hands, according to the statement.
According to the announcement, the accused and the confiscated areca nuts were turned over to the Champhai Customs Preventive Force for additional legal proceedings. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 16 kg of methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 16 crore from the global illegal drug market earlier this month after stopping a significant drug trafficking effort close to Aizawl. A car was stopped on the Aizawl–Champhai road on the outskirts of the city, which led to the seizure. Under the rear seat and inside the fuel tank, officials found 16 brick-sized bundles of pink/orange meth tablets hidden in specially made chambers.
