The Governor of Mizoram has extended Governor’s Rule in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) for an additional six months due to ongoing political uncertainty and administrative issues. Initially, the Governor assumed all functions of the CADC on July 7, 2025, for a term of six months, which is now extended under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The notification from the District Council and Minority Affairs Department acknowledges Lakkhan Chakma’s claim to be the third Chief Executive Member of the 11th CADC, referring to Para 20BB, which required consultation with the Council of Ministers regarding the claimant’s majority. Despite the absence of major political instability, persistent changes in allegiance among elected members and an upcoming Inquiry Commission report necessitated the continuation of Governor’s Rule. Following the provisions of Para 16(2) and Para 20BB, the Governor has authorized the extension until further notice, with the Deputy Commissioner of Lawngtlai district exercising powers on the Governor’s behalf starting January 7, 2026. The order was communicated by Lalhmunsanga Hnamte, Secretary to the Government of Mizoram.
