Twelve foreign delegates from various countries’ Election Management Bodies, alongside three representatives from the Election Commission of India, arrived at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati for a two-day visit. This visit is part of the International Election Visitors Programme (IEVP) and is pertinent to the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for April 9. Countries represented in the delegation include Angola, Bhutan, Egypt, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Benin, and Croatia, reflecting a significant movement towards global cooperation in electoral observation.

The initiative is designed to allow international observers to experience India’s electoral processes directly. On April 8, the delegates will undergo briefings by Assam’s chief electoral officer and tour dispatch centres and control rooms to assess the level of election preparedness. The following day, they will visit several polling stations in different districts of Assam to monitor voting procedures, security measures, and the implementation of election technologies. This visit not only highlights India’s commitment to transparent electoral practices but also fosters international dialogue on election management and integrity.
