Three people, including Aizawl Doordarshan Director (News) Nampibou Marinmai, were killed and another person was seriously injured after a car plunged into a gorge near Sialsuk, a popular tourist destination in Mizoram’s Aizawl district, on Thursday, officials said.
The victims were returning to Aizawl after visiting the tourist spot, located about 65 kilometres from the state capital, when the accident occurred.
Among those killed was Dr. Engam Pame, Additional Director General of the Press Information Bureau’s regional office in Imphal. The third victim was H. Lianwala, a Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) member attached to the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) Field Office in Aizawl.
Officials said the driver of the vehicle survived the crash but sustained serious injuries and was rushed for medical treatment.
Following the accident, police personnel and volunteers of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) launched rescue operations at the site and assisted in recovering the bodies from the gorge.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the accident. An investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances that led to the vehicle falling into the gorge.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the media and information departments, with colleagues and officials mourning the loss of the senior officers and staff member.
