The Mizoram Home Department has reported that biometric enrollment of Myanmar nationals residing in the state has reached 37.40 per cent, covering 11,693 individuals out of the total 31,265 currently sheltered across Mizoram.

Official data shows that the enrolled population includes 3,319 males, 3,584 females, and 4,790 minors under the age of 18. The enrollment drive, which began in July, has progressed steadily in districts with smaller migrant populations but has faced slower rates in Champhai, Siaha, and Lawngtlai, which host the highest concentration of Myanmar nationals.

An official emphasized the importance of participation, stating, “Biometric enrollment is nothing to fear. Those who refuse to participate will be regarded as illegal migrants and may face deportation.”

The enrollment process has faced several challenges, including poor internet connectivity, continued cross-border inflow, and frequent return migration, all of which have affected data consistency. Moreover, while many Myanmar nationals reside in designated relief camps, a significant number live in scattered rented accommodations, requiring extensive field outreach by enrollment teams.

The initiative follows directives from the Union Government, which instructed Mizoram to carry out biometric registration of Myanmar nationals. Initial resistance from the state, due to concerns that collected data might be shared with Myanmar authorities, was resolved when the Union Government approved enrollment through the Foreigners Identification Portal (FIP), ensuring a secure and independent process.
