A fresh clash erupted between protesters from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh at the Likabali entry point in Dhemaji district on Thursday, as an indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh entered its second day. The confrontation reportedly began after people from Arunachal Pradesh allegedly pelted stones at protesters, leaving some with minor injuries. Police from Arunachal Pradesh subsequently fired three rounds into the air to disperse the gathering and restore order. The blockade, led by the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) along with other Mising organisations, follows an alleged firing incident earlier in which 12 people from Assam were injured amid a dispute over land encroachment along the inter-state border. Protesters have blocked several key entry points, while allowing emergency and school transportation to pass. They are demanding a resolution to the long-standing border dispute, action against those allegedly involved in the firing and an end to encroachment on Assam land. Assam ministers Atul Bora and Ranoj Pegu are scheduled to meet TMPK leaders to discuss the blockade. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu to order an inquiry and ensure strict action against those responsible, while Khandu has reportedly assured that appropriate action will be taken.
