The Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH) will soon offer tissue transplantation services, marking a major milestone in Mizoram’s public healthcare sector, Health Minister Lalrinpuii announced on Thursday. Speaking at a party meeting in Lunglei, the minister said arrangements are being made with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO). A transplant coordinator, consultant, and supporting staff are being appointed, and an operation theatre has been set up at ZMCH. The institution is now awaiting the required license for the procedures to begin.

Once approved, specialist doctors from other states will perform kidney and heart transplants at ZMCH. Notably, the cost of a heart transplant, which is around ₹9 lakh in private hospitals in Aizawl, will be significantly reduced to ₹1 lakh at ZMCH, making life-saving treatments more accessible to patients.

The Mizoram government recently converted the Zoram Medical College Society into a fully state-owned institution, renaming it Zoram Medical College and Hospital. Lalrinpuii also highlighted the state’s efforts to address the shortage of doctors and healthcare workers, announcing that 100 new healthcare staff will be recruited soon.
