The Mizoram State Level Police Conference was held on Friday at the DGP Conference Hall under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Lalduhoma, alongside Home Minister K Sapdanga. The purpose was to review the outcomes of the 60th National Level DGP/IGP Conference which took place in November in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, and was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Chief Minister reported that this National Conference formulated 107 recommendations aimed at enhancing and modernizing policing across India, noting that Mizoram has begun implementing several of these recommendations while seeking additional support from the Central Government for further measures.

Highlighting the accomplishments of the Mizoram Police over the last two years, the Chief Minister mentioned a significant decline in drug abuse, attributing it to the police’s dedicated efforts, despite the ongoing challenge of complete eradication. He recognized the police’s successful actions against arecanut trafficking, which has resulted in the highest local market price for Mizoram’s arecanut. Financially, he announced that Mizoram has received Rs. 3.18 crore under the Police Modernisation Scheme, with an additional Rs. 21.276 crore approved for essential police needs including the procurement of bulletproof vehicles. He praised Director General of Police, Sharad Agarwal, for his role in securing these funds.

The Chief Minister also underscored the State Government’s vision for police modernization, which includes the establishment of the Directorate of Prosecution as mandated by the newly enacted BNSS Act, 2023. While some recommendations from the National Police Conference can be enacted swiftly, others will need to be prioritized based on the State’s financial capacity. Home Minister K. Sapdanga commented that policing encompasses not only the punishment of offenders but also the vital roles of public safety and social harmony, stressing the importance of adapting to new and emerging crime challenges while continuing to monitor traditional ones.

During the conference, DG Sharad Agarwal provided a detailed overview of the recommendations from the National Conference, highlighting a roadmap consistent with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision focused on enhancing internal security, utilizing modern technology in police operations, improving disaster management preparedness, ensuring women’s safety, and addressing geopolitical challenges. The meeting was attended by key officials, including Home Secretary Vanlalmawia and district Superintendents of Police, most of whom participated online, ensuring an inclusive discussion on the pressing issues of police efficacy and community safety in Mizoram.
