Samsung announced on Thursday plans to purchase and deploy 50,000 Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) to enhance its chip production for mobile devices and robotics. The GPUs will power a facility Samsung is calling an “AI Megafactory,” though the company has not revealed a timeline for its construction.

This move marks another high-profile collaboration for Nvidia, whose chips are crucial for developing and running advanced AI. The partnership follows Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s announcement of deals with companies such as Palantir, Eli Lilly, CrowdStrike, and Uber. Huang was later seen in South Korea with Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong, highlighting the close ties. Other Korean firms, including SK Group and Hyundai, are also investing heavily in GPUs.

Nvidia’s senior VP for Asia-Pacific, Raymond Teh, noted the company is working with the Korean government to advance its AI ambitions. Samsung will adapt its chipmaking lithography to Nvidia’s GPUs, promising a 20-fold performance boost, and will utilize Nvidia’s Omniverse software to run AI models on its devices. Additionally, Samsung, a major supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for Nvidia, will optimize its fourth-generation HBM for AI applications.
