Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Bairabi–Sairang new railway line, a mega infrastructure project worth over ₹8,070 crore that officially connects the state capital to the Indian Railways network for the first time. The ambitious project, carved through some of the country’s most difficult hilly terrain, is being hailed as a remarkable engineering accomplishment. Stretching across valleys and mountains, the railway line comprises 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 88 minor bridges. With the inauguration, Sairang is now directly linked to the national capital via the Rajdhani Express, placing Aizawl firmly on India’s railway map.

Addressing the public from Lengpui Airport—after being unable to reach Aizawl due to inclement weather—the Prime Minister said he could still feel the warmth and affection of Mizoram’s people. He called the completion of the project a “historic milestone” for both the state and the entire Northeast. “Years ago, when the foundation stone was laid, the task seemed nearly impossible. But the resilience of our engineers and workers turned this dream into reality,” Modi said, lauding the dedication behind the project. He added that the new railway line would not only improve connectivity but also boost trade, tourism, and economic opportunities for Mizoram.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the people of Mizoram, acknowledging their contributions to India’s history and development. “Whether in the freedom struggle or in nation building, the people of Mizoram have always stood tall. Sacrifice and service, courage and compassion—these values are deeply rooted in Mizo society,” he remarked. At the same time, Modi took aim at opposition parties, accusing them of neglecting the Northeast for decades. “For a long time, some political parties cared only for regions with more seats and votes, leaving the Northeast behind. Our government has placed the neglected and marginalised at the heart of development,” he said.
