Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, emphasized the growth potential of Mizoram’s food and processing sector during a press meeting held on Friday following the 21st Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), India Region Zone-III, at the Mizoram Legislative Assembly.

Birla highlighted the importance of developing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and the trade and commerce sectors in the state, specifically focusing on organic farming and products. He stressed the necessity for improved electricity supply to support the growth of processing plants in the region.

“With enhanced connectivity through roads, air, and railways, Mizoram has significant potential for growth in the food and processing sector,” he stated.

Addressing the need for legislative improvement, Birla urged members of the Legislative Assemblies to meet for the minimum required number of days and to undergo better training with the latest technology to connect more effectively with the public.

He stressed that the sanctity and transparency of legislative bodies are essential for strengthening democracy. “The legislature’s primary function is to formulate laws and policies, ensure accountability and transparency in governance, and create public welfare schemes through meaningful discussions that prioritize public sentiments,” he said.

Birla added that maintaining the integrity and conduct of legislative members is crucial for upholding the sanctity of the institution. “It is our responsibility to uphold decorum, decency, and dignity within our legislative Houses,” he remarked, advocating for discussions that align with the people’s hopes and expectations.

He praised the North-Eastern legislative bodies for engaging in productive discussions on local issues, integrating technology, and passing transformative laws. “The quality of lawmaking has improved, and our focus should now be on making our legislative institutions more future-oriented and result-driven,” he noted.

Concluding his speech, Birla urged for the maximization of public welfare through digital technology, increased public participation, and strengthening the parliamentary committee system. “Our ultimate goal is to ensure that development benefits reach every member of society,” he affirmed.
