Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, has categorically dismissed widespread rumors suggesting that the Indian government is planning to impose a nationwide lockdown. Taking to social media platform X, the Minister clarified that the reports are “completely false” and that no such proposal is currently under consideration by the Government of India.

The speculation gained momentum following global disruptions in energy supply chains caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Concerns over fuel shortages and rising crude oil prices—which surged from $70 to nearly $122 per barrel over the last month—led to panic-buying at petrol stations in several parts of the country. Addressing these anxieties, Mr. Puri emphasized that the government is monitoring the situation in real-time and remains fully prepared to handle emerging challenges.

“In such times, it is important that we remain calm, responsible, and united,” the Minister stated, adding that attempts to spread misinformation are “irresponsible and harmful.” He assured citizens that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, all necessary steps have been taken to ensure the uninterrupted availability of fuel, energy, and essential commodities.

To further insulate consumers from international price volatility, the government also announced a significant reduction in central excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per liter each. Additionally, export duties were imposed on diesel and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to prioritize domestic supply. Authorities have urged the public to rely only on official government channels for information and to avoid circulating unverified claims that could trigger unnecessary public distress.
