Mizoram has been officially linked to India’s railway network for the first time with the inauguration of the 51.38-kilometre Bairabi–Sairang rail line, marking a momentous shift in the socio-economic and tourism prospects of this once-remote northeastern state.
Commissioned in June 2025, the rail line is being hailed as a landmark infrastructural achievement. Winding through lush green forests, deep valleys, and steep ridges, the line features 48 tunnels and 142 bridges, a feat of modern engineering that highlights the Indian Railways’ commitment to integrating difficult terrain into the national grid. For Mizoram, a landlocked state with rugged topography, the introduction of rail connectivity is more than a transport upgrade—it is a gateway to growth. Until now, reaching the state meant arduous road journeys or infrequent flights. With the Sairang rail terminal now just 20 kilometers from Aizawl, the state capital, Mizoram is poised to become an accessible and compelling destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Adding to the excitement, Indian Railways is set to introduce Vistadome coaches on this route, designed to provide passengers with panoramic views of Mizoram’s captivating landscape. From the Reiek Hills to Vantawng Falls and the tranquil Tam Dil Lake, the journey itself promises to be as enriching as the destinations.“Sairang is no longer a quiet riverside town—it’s the new tourism gateway of Mizoram,” said a tourism official during the inaugural ceremony. The station area is already undergoing transformation, with plans to include eco-lodges, cultural stalls, and bamboo handicraft markets, all catering to a growing demographic of environmentally conscious travelers.
Strategically located, Sairang offers easy access to popular attractions such as Reiek Heritage Village, Phawngpui National Park (Blue Mountain), and the Dampa Tiger Reserve. These sites, previously hidden away in the hills, are now within a few hours’ scenic drive from the railway terminal, unlocking the state’s vast eco-tourism potential.
