The Mizoram government is preparing to launch a crop insurance scheme aimed at protecting farmers from financial losses caused by natural disasters, pest attacks, and crop failures, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister P.C. Vanlalruata announced on Monday. Speaking to reporters, the minister said that a state-level coordination committee on crop insurance has already been formed, and a general insurance company has been selected to implement the scheme. The initiative, he said, is a part of the state’s broader plan to ensure income stability for farmers who are frequently affected by unpredictable weather and market fluctuations.

“One of our key promises was to buy agricultural produce directly from farmers and introduce crop insurance to safeguard them from losses. Our Chief Minister has placed high priority on the welfare of farmers, and now, with this scheme, we can finally deliver on that commitment,” Vanlalruata stated. The minister further highlighted that the government has already started procurement of agricultural products, fulfilling one of the major pre-poll pledges made by the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) during the 2023 Assembly elections. Despite recent dips in ginger prices, the state continued to support farmers through the “Bana Kaih” (Handholding) scheme, launched in September last year.

Under this initiative, the government has procured raw ginger directly from cultivators, spending or releasing nearly ₹140 crore so far. For the fiscal year 2025–26, another ₹50 crore has been earmarked to sustain and expand the scheme.
