The Mizoram government has urged the National Skill Development Corporation International (NSDCI) to set up a Japanese language learning centre in the state capital, Aizawl, to help local youths secure employment abroad, particularly in Japan. Mizoram Youth Commission (MYC) chairman Malsawmzuala Ralte placed the request during a meeting with NSDCI Chief Executive Officer Alok Kumar in New Delhi on Thursday. The discussion centred on the growing demand among Mizo youths for jobs in Japan, especially in the fields of caregiving and nursing, where language proficiency is a key requirement. At present, the state government collaborates with NSDCI to send candidates to Noida for Japanese language training. However, Ralte noted that the distance creates financial and logistical challenges for many aspiring youths, limiting participation. To address this, he proposed that the new centre be established within the premises of the Mizoram Youth Commission in Aizawl, ensuring easier access to training.
The proposal received a positive response from NSDCI. CEO Alok Kumar welcomed the idea and assured that a team would visit Mizoram soon to examine the feasibility and prepare an implementation plan. The move is expected to not only reduce barriers for aspiring candidates but also expand the pool of skilled workers ready for overseas employment. According to government figures, more than 100 young people from Mizoram are currently working in Japan under various skill development and employment exchange programmes. Officials believe that the establishment of a dedicated Japanese language centre in the state could significantly increase these numbers by equipping more youths with the language and cultural skills required for Japan’s employment market.
The initiative reflects Mizoram’s broader push to create avenues for its educated but often underemployed youth population. With limited industrial and private sector opportunities within the state, overseas employment has become a vital option for many families. By focusing on language training and skill development, the government aims to provide a structured pathway for young people to secure jobs abroad while contributing to the state’s economic stability through remittances.
