In a renewed effort to enhance tribal education in Mizoram’s remote areas, the state government plans to set up six new Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS), increasing the total number to 17. At present, Mizoram operates 11 EMRS across various districts, providing free education and boarding facilities to tribal students from Classes 6 to 12. Each school has a capacity of 480 students.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma recently led a key meeting of the EMRS governing council to assess the schools’ current performance and discuss future strategies. Officials highlighted the government’s focus on boosting student enrollment and creating job opportunities for locals through these institutions.

Out of the six proposed schools, detailed project reports (DPRs) for four have already been submitted to the central government, while the remaining are still being prepared. This initiative reflects Mizoram’s commitment to expanding quality education access and addressing developmental disparities in tribal regions.
