Mizoram Police dealt a significant blow to cross-border drug trafficking networks by seizing large quantities of heroin and methamphetamine in two consecutive operations in Champhai and Aizawl districts. The combined value of the contraband exceeds Rs 2.7 crore, authorities said.

On the night of August 17, Champhai Police personnel at Hnahlan Beat Post discovered a suspicious white EECO van (Reg. No. MZ-01-Z-6975) parked on the outskirts of Hnahlan village. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled into the jungle. A search revealed 240 grams of heroin, cleverly hidden in Crispy Wafer “Milk 4 Stix” packets, with an estimated value of ₹17.2 lakh. A case under sections 21(b)/25 of the ND&PS Act was registered at Champhai Police Station. A follow-up operation led to the arrest of Ahmed Ali (26) of Karimganj, Assam. Investigations are ongoing to trace the broader network.

In a separate operation on August 18, a joint team from the Special Narcotics Police Station under CID (Crime) and 225 Battalion of the CRPF intercepted a Mahindra Bolero (Reg. No. MZ05-6161) in the Muallungthu and Hualngohmun areas of Aizawl. Officers recovered 7.955 kg of methamphetamine tablets, hidden in secret compartments under the vehicle’s rear seat and floorboard, valued at over ₹1.03 crore. Two individuals, Shanti Jeeban Chakma (30) of Lawngtlai and Brighu Dhan Chakma (31) of Mamit, were arrested in connection with the seizure. A case under sections 22(c)/25/29(1) of the ND&PS Act has been registered.
