The Mizoram government is preparing to make several upgraded schools fully operational from the 2026–27 academic session, School Education Minister Vanlalthlana informed the state Assembly on March 10.

Responding to queries in the Assembly, the minister said the institutions that have been upgraded meet the required legal and eligibility conditions and are expected to begin functioning properly from the next academic year. The government is currently working on the necessary administrative and logistical arrangements to ensure that the schools can start operating smoothly.

Vanlalthlana also referred to earlier developments in the state’s education sector. He said the previous government led by former chief minister Zoramthanga of the Mizo National Front (MNF) had upgraded 180 schools during its tenure. These included schools at different levels across the state.

The minister informed the House that the present government, led by the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), has already taken further steps in this direction. In February this year, the government finalised the upgradation of 100 schools to lump sum grant-in-aid status. According to the minister, the upgraded institutions include 44 higher secondary schools, 44 high schools and 34 elementary schools.

He said the government is now focusing on completing the remaining formalities so that these schools can start functioning fully from the coming academic session. Officials are working on arrangements related to staffing, infrastructure, and administrative procedures.

Vanlalthlana also informed the Assembly that a separate notification for the upgradation of more schools is currently under process. The government plans to expand educational facilities further so that students in different parts of the state can have better access to schooling.

The minister also spoke about the shortage of teachers in several schools across Mizoram. He said the School Education Department has already approached higher authorities to seek approval for filling vacant posts in primary schools.

To address the immediate need for teachers, the government is planning to appoint teachers on a contract basis in middle schools. According to the minister, steps are being taken to ensure that schools do not face difficulties due to staff shortages.

Vanlalthlana informed the Assembly that recruitment is already underway for 20 casual teachers in Science and Mathematics for high schools. In addition, 15 casual teachers are being recruited for higher secondary schools.

The minister further said that permission has been granted to recruit 57 regular teachers, and the recruitment process has already started. Once completed, these appointments are expected to strengthen the teaching workforce in government schools.

Apart from these measures, the government is also planning to fill several vacant posts under the Samagra Shiksha scheme. The minister said these positions will be filled in phases so that schools can function more effectively.
