Mizoram has rolled out the Sugamya Yatra (Access Audit), a major initiative under the Accessible India Campaign, to examine whether public spaces across the state are truly accessible to persons with disabilities. The move comes as part of efforts to enforce the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act and ensure equal participation in community life.

On September 19, inspection teams visited several important institutions, including Pachhunga University College, the Presbyterian Church of India at Republic Veng, and the Administrative Training Institute (MINECO). The audits are being conducted in collaboration with the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (NILD).

Officials said the checks are designed to evaluate whether essential facilities such as ramps, signages, restrooms, and entryways are suitable for wheelchair users, the visually impaired, and others with special needs.

The access audit is not limited to Aizawl. Teams are scheduled to cover seven districts of Mizoram, working alongside persons with disabilities to identify shortcomings and recommend improvements. Authorities stressed that including disabled individuals in the process ensures that solutions match real-world challenges rather than just meeting paper-based standards.
