Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday inaugurated the Pesticide Residue Analysis Laboratory at the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, Central Agricultural University (Imphal), during the institution’s 27th Foundation Day celebrations, marking a major milestone in the state’s efforts to promote safe and sustainable agriculture. The newly established laboratory will serve as a hub for research and monitoring under the All India Network Project on Pesticide Residues, ensuring that agricultural produce in Mizoram remains free from harmful chemical contamination. The facility is expected to boost scientific research, safeguard public health, and enhance the quality of farm products in the state and across the Northeast.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Horticulture Minister C. Lalsawivunga and Agriculture Minister P.C. Vanlalruata as Guests of Honour. Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Lalduhoma lauded the college for its 27 years of contribution to higher education, agricultural innovation, and veterinary sciences. “The Selesih Veterinary College has grown into a centre of excellence that benefits not only Mizoram but the entire Northeastern region. This new laboratory will strengthen research and ensure our agricultural produce remains safe and healthy for consumers,” he said. Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of agriculture and animal husbandry in Mizoram’s economy and encouraged students and faculty to leverage the laboratory for research, innovation, and academic excellence.
Established in 1997, the college currently enrolls 440 students and has produced 891 BVSc & AH graduates, 378 postgraduates, and 15 PhD scholars over the years. The laboratory modernization project, funded with ₹11.80 crore under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) in 2019, reflects the state government’s commitment to advancing science-based agriculture and fostering a safe, self-reliant food system.
