
The completion of a railway bridge in Sairang, which connects the state capital city of Aizawl to India’s extensive railway network for the first time since independence, is a major milestone in Mizoram’s transportation infrastructure. On Thursday, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the finished bridge on social networking platform X to proclaim the accomplishment. He characterized it as a significant advancement in improving Mizoram’s connection.
The new railway line runs from Sairang, which is close to Aizawl, to the Bairabi border in Assam. With a total estimated cost of Rs. 8,215 crore, the project, which has already witnessed an investment of Rs. 7,714 crore, is anticipated to be launched in July. Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena promised to incorporate Aizawl into the national railway network and told Parliament that the railway line is getting close to operational condition.
Four sections make up the 51.38-kilometer railway line: Mualkhang-Sairang, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Bairabi-Hortoki. It is anticipated that the successful completion of this railway project will significantly improve Mizoram’s connectivity, opening up new commercial and travel opportunities and contributing to the region’s overall economic growth. It is anticipated that the new rail link will play a significant role in transforming Mizoram’s socioeconomic landscape.
