Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Wednesday announced that the long-awaited Mizoram Engineering College will finally commence its academic sessions soon. The announcement came during a public event held in Serchhip town, where the Chief Minister also felicitated meritorious students who excelled in the Mizoram Civil Services Examination and recent school board exams. Addressing the gathering, Lalduhoma said the government is determined to transform Mizoram into a hub of quality education and youth empowerment. “Our goal is to make each and every Mizo self-reliant and capable of contributing to the state’s progress,” he stated. The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s broader vision to establish a full-fledged state university and further strengthen premier institutions like the National Institute of Technology (NIT) and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).

The Mizoram Engineering College, which was virtually inaugurated in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had remained non-functional for years due to multiple technical and infrastructural hurdles. However, the government has now resolved these issues, clearing the way for the college to start its first batch of students shortly. Located at Pukpui village, approximately 12 km from Lunglei town, the college has been developed on 24.9 acres of land with a total project cost of Rs 26 crore. The project is funded under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), a flagship central government scheme aimed at improving the quality of higher education across India.

Officials said the college is ready to function with an initial intake capacity of 300 students, and will offer undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. It boasts a fully equipped laboratory, library, cafeteria, students’ common room, and separate hostels for boys and girls, creating a conducive environment for holistic learning.
