Mizoram has achieved a historic milestone by becoming India’s first fully literate state under the ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) initiative. Chief Minister Lalduhoma made the formal declaration during a celebratory event at the Mizoram University Auditorium.
Hailing the achievement as a “transformational milestone,” Lalduhoma said it was a moment of pride for all Mizos. “This is not merely a statistic, but a testament to the discipline, determination, and vision of our people,” he stated. He praised the efforts of 1,692 adult learners who overcame barriers to embrace education and called on citizens to now pursue digital and financial literacy as well.
The event was attended by Union Minister of State for Education, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Jayant Chaudhary, and Mizoram’s Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana. Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena chaired the function.
As per the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS 2023–24), Mizoram achieved a 98.2% literacy rate, surpassing the ULLAS benchmark of 95%. The literacy drive, led by the School Education Department and supported by Samagra Shiksha and the New India Literacy Programme, involved 292 volunteer teachers and covered over 3,000 identified illiterate individuals.
