The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the Mizoram government have signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting tourism in the state ahead of the launch of Mizoram’s first-ever railway link. The landmark Bairabi–Sairang New Railway Line Project, developed under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), will connect Mizoram to the Indian Railways network for the first time. This new rail link will extend up to Sairang, located close to the state capital Aizawl, promising easier access and greater economic opportunities for the hilly region.
Under the MoU signed in August 2025, IRCTC will act as the front-end marketing agency, promoting both inbound and outbound tourism to and from Mizoram. The state’s tourism department will collaborate by providing access to tourism infrastructure such as tourist lodges and will work with IRCTC to design curated travel packages. The partnership also aims to develop local Destination Management Companies and service providers to offer seamless arrangements for transport, accommodation, and sightseeing. Special attention will be given to showcasing Mizoram’s rich cultural heritage — its colourful festivals, traditional bamboo dances, folk music, and ceremonial rituals. The state’s scenic beauty, featuring emerald valleys, lush hills, pristine waterfalls, and heritage sites, will also be a key attraction.
The agreement supports IRCTC’s “Discover NE Beyond Guwahati” initiative, which plans to introduce a special tourist train with Aizawl as a major destination. This service will focus on affordable tourism and sustainable travel experiences, expected to launch soon after the railway line becomes operational.
