Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh has called for the installation of a weather radar in the state to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts and ensure timely dissemination of critical information to the public. The Governor made the appeal during a detailed review meeting with Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi, Director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Aizawl.
Singh stressed the importance of establishing stronger coordination between the IMD, line departments, and the media, especially in communicating weather updates in local languages so that communities across the state can understand and prepare accordingly.
“I appreciate the work being done by the Aizawl Meteorological Centre, but there’s a growing need to expand reach and strengthen public awareness. Early warning systems are only effective when the information is accessible and trusted,” the Governor said, according to official sources.
During the meeting, Dwivedi shared a comprehensive presentation on current operations and upcoming plans under the IMD’s “Mission Mausam.” One of the major announcements was the proposed installation of a Doppler Weather Radar at Laipuitlang in Aizawl. This radar will significantly enhance real-time weather tracking and forecasting capabilities, especially during cyclonic and monsoon conditions.
Dwivedi noted that nearly 90% of cyclonic systems affecting Mizoram originate from the southern direction. To strengthen monitoring in that region, a new meteorological sub-office will be opened in Siaha, the southernmost district of the state.
