In Mizoram, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red signal, predicting exceptionally high rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. To protect children and employees, the Mizoram government has responded by announcing that all schools will be closed. The state’s School Education Department formally announced the directive late Wednesday, stating that it was made after consulting with the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department and considering the IMD’s warnings and updates from its Regional Meteorological Center in Guwahati and the Meteorological Center in Aizawl.
The public has been advised by authorities to exercise caution and stay alert. District-level emergency centers and the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) are on high alert. In the event of an emergency, residents are urged to call the universal emergency number 112, 0389-2342520, 1077, and 1070. Additionally, a warning has been released by the Mizoram Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department asking residents to remain indoors during inclement weather and to report any events to the closest emergency center.
The warning follows heartbreaking recollections from May of last year, when landslides caused by unrelenting rain in Aizawl and neighboring regions claimed over 30 lives. To avoid such deaths, the state administration has now increased interagency coordination and emergency preparedness.
