Early on Tuesday morning, Famiangi, who is thought to be the oldest lady in Mizoram history, died quietly at her home in Pangkhua village. Her age was 117. The community has long recorded her age in village records, according to local authorities, who also stated that she died at around 7:00 a.m. As a living connection over three centuries of change in the Northeast, Famiangi was born in 1908 and lived through the colonial era, India’s independence, and the digital age. Local records that were kept by community leaders confirmed her age. She was married to the late Heinawna and was the daughter of Huathmung and Suisung.

With 51 grandchildren, 122 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great-grandchildren (a total of 195 descendants), the couple’s extended family now consists of one of the biggest clan networks in the region. They also had eight children. Long into her elder years, Famiangi continued to be involved in public life. When she cast a ballot in the 2023 Mizoram State Assembly elections, she garnered statewide attention and received a certificate of gratitude from the state election commission for her civic engagement. She was cared for at home until the end, although her family reported that age-related problems had caused her health to deteriorate in recent months.

People in the Lawngtlai district are honoring a life that exemplified fortitude, tradition, and community spirit while also lamenting her departure.
