South Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district deputy commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga on Tuesday administered the oath of office to the newly appointed Deputy Chief Executive Member Sanghuliana Mualchin and other 9 Executive Members (EMs) of the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) in Lawngtlai town.
Chief Executive Member (CEM) C. Lalsawmzuala also allocated portfolios of the Dy. CEM and EMs on Tuesday. The budget session of the LADC is summoned to commence from March 27.
With the swearing-in of the EMs, formation of the executive committee of the LADC has been completed after a gap of 2 months since declaration of the results of the election to the 25-member LADC were announced due to prevailing political uncertainty stemmed from the fragmented mandate of the electorate.
Though the Mizo National Front (MNF) emerged as the largest political party by bagging 8 seats, it fell short of having majority. The Congress party secured 7 seats, the ruling party in the state Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) got 6 seats and the BJP and independents bagged 2 seats each.
Prolonged negotiations between the three major political parties to form the executive committee stalled the process and the post-poll alliance between the MNF and the Congress in the name of United Legislature Party (ULP) led by Lalsawmzuala was finally asked by the state governor Gen. VK Singh. The governor finally approved Lalsawmzuala as the CEM of LADC on the eve of the Republic Day and was sworn in on January 27. Lalsawmzuala proved his majority in the floor of the council on January 29 paving the way for formation of the executive committee in the LADC.
