Kidney Stone

Hard, stone-like formations that develop inside one or both kidneys are known medically as kidney stones, or renal calculus. These result from the urine’s overabundance of specific minerals.

Like the differences in size and color, the texture of these stones can also vary. Dr. Dilip Dhanpal disclosed, “Some stones may appear jagged while others may be smooth. A small stone can easily pass through the urinary tract, often causing little to no pain. Conversely, a larger kidney stone will not be able to pass, resulting in obstructed urine flow, which can lead to significant pain and bleeding. The formation of concentrated urine may occur due to inadequate fluid intake. As a result, minerals can remain in the kidneys, clustering together to create solid deposits.

The three primary elements that lead to the formation of stones are as follows:

Calcium oxalate: A common constituent of kidney stones.
Uric acid: Accumulates in the urine as a result of excessive consumption of high-purine foods, including red meat and shellfish, as well as a high intake of alcoholic beverages.
Phosphate and cystine: Associated with stone formation in individuals with certain metabolic disorders.

And what is to be avoided? The doctor advises avoiding foods high in oxalate, such spinach and almonds, and limiting salt consumption because it will raise calcium levels in the urine.
