A group of Mizo communities living in two valleys in the Karimganj district of Assam told Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Tuesday that they would like to join Mizoram. According to a leader who spoke on condition of anonymity, leaders of the Thangram Indigenous People’s Movement (TIPM) told Lalduhoma during a meeting that their communities, culture, and religion would be the most safe and protected if their area was included in Mizoram. According to the leader, the TIPM, which speaks for the native Zo people of the Singla and Langkaih (Longai) valleys, encouraged Lalduhoma to take steps to ensure that their villages and inhabited areas are united with Mizoram.

Over 30,000 individuals of various Zo ethnic communities reside in the Singla and Langkaih valleys, which cover an area of more than 180 square miles, according to TIPM. The Mizo people of the Singla Valley and Langkaih Valley have been calling for a merger with Mizoram since 2020. In 2021, they delivered memoranda to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi explaining their plans. The Mizo people live in the “Thangram” (Western) region of Assam, which consists of roughly 24 villages. The TIPM leaders also claimed that the Thangram area had long been inhabited by the Mizo or Zo Indigenous people and had been a part of Mizoram before the state gained independence in 1987.
