The Assam Rifles apprehended a suspect and seized arms and ammunition in Chamdur P village of Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district. The operation, carried out on September 2 following specific intelligence inputs, reflects the sustained efforts of security forces to check the flow of arms in the sensitive border region. According to officials, troops launched an area domination patrol in the village and intercepted a suspect. Upon a thorough search, security personnel recovered one .22 air carbine, one .22 single-barrel miniature rifle of foreign make, two .22 magazines, and ten live rounds of .22 ammunition. The suspect, along with the seized items, was handed over to the Lawngtlai Police Station for further investigation.
This latest recovery comes close on the heels of another major arms haul in Mizoram’s Champhai district last week. On August 29, acting on credible intelligence, Assam Rifles personnel launched a search operation in Saikumphal village, during which they discovered a large cache of arms, ammunition, explosives, and war-like stores. During that operation, troops cordoned off a suspected house and detained its owner after recovering a 12-bore rifle, a pistol, ammunition, and explosives. Subsequent searches uncovered a hidden cache that included one Heckler & Koch G3 assault rifle, two Springfield sniper rifles, two shotguns, one MA assault rifle, and two hand grenades.
The recovery also included a vast quantity of ammunition—75 live sniper rounds, 92 live .303 tracer rounds, 30 live 7.62 mm rounds, 91 live 5.56 mm rounds, and eight live 12-bore rounds. Explosives comprised three drums of Cordtex, improvised explosive device (IED) components, a cylindrical explosive packet, and seven packets of PEK. Security forces also recovered war-like stores such as two scopes, a bulletproof plate, three bulletproof jackets, and a belt.
