The inauguration of the new Science, Technology & Innovation (STI) Hub at Mizoram University by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, in partnership with Mizoram University and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), represents a significant step in leveraging technology for rural economic development. The facility provides dedicated laboratories, training spaces, and innovation centers designed to address the state’s unique geographical and socio-economic challenges.

Since its inception two years ago, the hub has benefited over 9,000 residents, with more than 70% of beneficiaries being women. Programs in food processing, bamboo craft innovation, digital literacy, and health awareness have fostered grassroots entrepreneurship and self-reliance. By integrating technologies from Amrita’s Live-in-Labs® and AMMACHI Labs—including solar dryers, eco-friendly bamboo machinery, and water purification systems—the hub ensures solutions are locally relevant, sustainable, and community-owned. Dr. Raghu Raman, Dean of Amrita School of Business, described the hub as “a bridge between science and society,” while Mizoram Rural Development Minister Dr. Lalnilawma highlighted its role in enhancing livelihoods and women’s economic participation.

Products emerging from the hub, such as bamboo crafts and solar-dried agricultural produce, are increasingly penetrating urban trade channels. Retailers and wholesalers are tapping into these offerings, strengthening cross-state supply chains, boosting tribal entrepreneurship, and integrating sustainable, high-value products into regional commerce. This initiative aligns with India’s ‘Vocal for Local’ strategy and multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, demonstrating how technology-driven innovation can stimulate regional economic growth.
