The Mizoram government is gearing up to host the 2nd Aizawl International Half Marathon, aiming to make the event a grand celebration of sports, culture, and community engagement. Preparations are in full swing to transform the marathon into more than just a race, but a festival that highlights the natural beauty and vibrant spirit of Aizawl.
At the official launch, Mizoram Sports Resident Commissioner Alexander V. Chongthu described the marathon as “not just a sporting event, but a festival where we will celebrate sports and life and enjoy the beautiful Aizawl and its surroundings.” He underscored the importance of connectivity in attracting participants, noting that the city is now better linked through Indian Railways following the recent inauguration of the Aizawl train station by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Aizawl appears very distant on the Indian map, but now we are connected, and this will help draw participants from across the country,” Chongthu said.
The marathon will feature inclusive race categories for both juniors and seniors, ensuring broad participation. Organisers are also targeting international athletes, particularly professional marathoners from Africa, to elevate the event’s global profile. Chongthu expressed optimism that the marathon would help position Mizoram as a vibrant destination for tourism and sports. “This event showcases our commitment to athletic excellence while promoting Mizoram’s scenic charm and cultural richness on a national and global stage,” he said.
