In a major crackdown on illegal plastic use, the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), along with the Aizawl Superintendent of Police, Mizoram Pollution Control Board, and the Local Council of Bethlehem locality, seized 1,800 kilograms of banned single-use plastic on Saturday night.
Officials said the operation led to the discovery of a huge stockpile of plastic bags, most of which were below the mandated 120-micron thickness standard set by the Central Pollution Control Board. The illegal consignment was traced to YB Lian, a resident of Bethlehem locality, who had reportedly smuggled the plastic bags into Mizoram from Myanmar.
AMC authorities confirmed that the seized items were a clear violation of the national ban on single-use plastics. They added that appropriate penalties and legal action would be taken against Lian under the provisions of existing environmental laws. “This seizure is a part of our continuous efforts to eliminate single-use plastics from Aizawl,” AMC officials said. “We are committed to enforcing the ban strictly and protecting our environment.
