Railway Track (1)

Mizoram’s capital Aizawl is set for its first railway connectivity with the Indian Railway, following 26 years of work. The 51.38km rail line connects Bairabi in Assam and Sairang in Aizawl, the capital of one of the country’s easternmost states. The project, conceptualized in 1999-2000, began in 2008-09 but faced challenges such as inclement weather, difficult terrain, lack of construction materials, and workforce. The new rail line will cut travel time between Bairabi and Aizawl from five to six hours to 1.5 hours, reducing transport costs, increasing trade, and providing access to healthcare, education, and opportunities. The railway plans to introduce vistadome coaches for visitors to enjoy a 360-degree view of the scenic route and visit tourist spots.
