Political activity has picked up in Mizoram as the state prepares for the upcoming elections to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC). With polling scheduled for April 21, all major political parties have begun intensive preparations, including finalising candidates and reaching out to voters across the city. The AMC has 19 wards, and voting will take place from 7 am to 5 pm. Counting of votes is scheduled for April 27, while re-polling, if required, will be held on April 23. The process of filing nominations is underway and will continue till March 25, with March 30 fixed as the last date for withdrawal of candidature. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has expressed confidence about retaining control of the civic body. Party leaders said candidates have been selected after consultations at the grassroots level. The party has also spoken about its plan to improve urban services and infrastructure in Aizawl, with a focus on better governance.

The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), which had won the last AMC elections, is also actively campaigning. Party leaders said their organisational network has been mobilised across all wards and they are aiming to return to power by focusing on their earlier work and local connect. The Indian National Congress is contesting all 19 seats and is trying to position itself as an alternative focused on public issues. So far, the party has announced candidates for 13 wards, and the remaining names are expected soon. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also stepped up its campaign. Party leaders said they are looking to highlight development work and their connection with the central government, hoping it will benefit Aizawl in terms of projects and funding.

According to official data, there are around 2.39 lakh eligible voters in Aizawl, including about 1.26 lakh women voters. With a large voter base and multiple parties in the fray, the election is expected to see close competition in many wards. In the last AMC elections held in February 2021, the MNF had won 11 seats, while the ZPM secured eight seats. The results had given the MNF control of the civic body. However, with the ZPM now in power in the state and other parties also trying to expand their presence, the upcoming election is likely to be closely contested.
