Police in Manipur have arrested 33 people and detained seven juveniles in connection with the violent protests that have been going on across the state. Amidst the disturbance, Manipur police conducted the arrests at several sites. In addition to starting an investigation, the police will file charges against individuals responsible. Through their X account, they have also pleaded with people to stop engaging in unlawful activity. “Manipur police requests the public not to indulge in unlawful behaviour and to cooperate with law enforcing agencies in maintenance of peace and normalcy,” they stated.
On September 11, Manipur police claimed that the situation was under control but tense, one day after students had fought with security officers during a march to the Raj Bhavan. In Imphal, a curfew that was enforced on Tuesday afternoon persisted throughout the morning of Wednesday. According to a senior official, more security troops were sent in, and police frequently monitored the impacted area to stop any further unfortunate incidents. On Thursday, the governor of Manipur, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, departed Imphal for Guwahati, the capital of Assam, following a day in which protesting students engaged in physical altercations with security personnel.
The altercation started while the students were making their way to the Raj Bhavan, a location of political authority. This uproar was linked to the increasing discontent in Manipur, a state that has recently seen high levels of tension. As things began to get worse, Acharya—who also serves as the governor of Assam—left Manipur, where he held an extra responsibility as governor. While sources did not state why he was visiting, his departure for Guwahati may be interpreted as a major political step. Manipur University postponed all planned undergraduate and graduate exams until further notice following this incident. The university published a notice announcing the impending announcement of new exam dates.
